37 states have adopted their own medical cannabis programs and 21 have legalized the plant recreationally. But the first state to do so? California, back in 1996. That’s right, the first “legal” 420 was celebrated over 25 years ago.

Though it was legal in California, the plant was still prohibited elsewhere in the US. Thankfully, the term has been shrouded in cannabis-friendly smoke for decades, starting first as a subtle code, signifying someone’s acceptance or use of cannabis, and has lived on as a time to toke up, and a date to celebrate. Today, April 20th is a loud rallying cry for legalization, for the normalization of the plant, and above all else…420 deals.
